Why Social Dance?
Seventh grade is a good time for children to gain the social skills needed to confidently participate in family weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs and school dances.
Who takes Social Dance?
The course is offered to WJHS-enrolled 7th graders. Typically about half of the 7th grade class signs up for Social Dance.
Who teaches Social Dance?
Once again, Vera Schmidt will be teaching. Vera is a dance instructor who specializes in teaching pre-teen students.
What will the class be like?
The majority of each lesson will be devoted to learning classic dances, including the waltz, foxtrot, cha-cha, and swing. The end of each class will focus on dances such as the Cotton-Eyed Joe and the Electric Slide. The class may also include a brief period of free dance. Vera also teaches etiquette, such as how to ask for a dance and how to escort your partner to the dance floor. Students do not choose their own dance partners most of the time. On the limited occasions when they find their own dance partners, it is conducted in a way that, again, is focused on alleviating awkwardness. The students are expected to behave like ladies and gentlemen.
When are the classes held?
The classes will be held on Tuesday evenings, from 7-8:30 pm, January 3 through February 14, 2012.
How do I enroll my child?
An invitation with a response card will be mailed to the home of each 7th grader in mid-November. Responses will be due by mid-December. Write these dates on your calendar and be on the lookout for your invitation. Please respond in a timely manner!
Anything else?
Shoes must be worn at all times and sneakers are not permitted. Boys should wear ties, dress shirts and dress pants. Jackets are not required. Girls should wear skirts or dresses. Revealing clothing, including spaghetti straps, is not allowed. Parents of Social Dance students are invited to attend the final class on February 14 – it’s a must-see event! We also need volunteers to chaperone.
